Empathy matters

I’m coming to terms with the fact that for a long time my emotional growth was truncated. As I reflect on my past relationships, I’ve come to understand that I lacked empathy for my friends and family. Sure, I loved people, but often only to the extent that I believed they could help me in future goals. I now realize that this was merely a transactional way at looking at relationships, as I was seeing people as a means to an end instead to the end, in and of themselves. We should love people because they are people and not because of what they can do for us. This is empathy. Empathy is a critical aspect of human interaction and has a profound impact on our relationships, our emotional intelligence, and our overall well-being.

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. It is not just about feeling sympathy or pity for someone, but rather, it is about being able to put yourself in their shoes and truly understand what they are feeling. When we practice empathy, we can see the world from someone else’s perspective, which can help to build bridges between people and foster greater understanding and connection.

I don’t have all of this perfected in my life. I understand that I still have much work to do and much growth to experience. But I am committed to this process and look forward to the growth it brings in cultivating fully flourishing relationships with others.
